[Notas de FZ en el casete “El Mundo de la Guitarra según Frank Zappa” - 1987] Esto es uno de los primeros ejemplos de una técnica que desarrollé, llamada xenocronía (sincronización extraña). Otros ejemplos son “Camisa de goma” en “Jeque Yerbuti” y todos los solos de guitarra en “El Garaje de Joe”, excepto “Una sandía en viruta para canastas de regalo”. Utilizando esta técnica, diversas pistas de grabaciones independientes son sincronizadas aleatoriamente para crear una composición final con relaciones rítmicas de otro modo inalcanzables. En términos polirrítmicos usuales hablamos de 5 en el espacio de 4 o de 7 en el espacio de 6. La xenocronía trata con unidades de tiempo más grandes: un solo completo con un paso de metrónomo en el espacio de una pieza con otro paso de metrónomo… es un poco como comprimir un lunes y un martes en el espacio de un miércoles.

[Notes by FZ on “The Guitar World according to Frank Zappa” - 1987] This is one of the earliest examples of a technique I developed called Xenochrony (strange synchronizations). Other examples include “Rubber shirt” on “Sheik Yerbouti” and every guitar solo on “Joe’s Garage”, except “Watermelon in Easter hay”. In this technique various tracks from unrelated sources are randomly synchronized with each other to make a final composition with rhythmic relationships unachievable by other means. In ordinary polyrhythmic terms we speak of 5 in the space of 4, or 7 in the space of six. In Xenochrony we deal with larger units of time: a complete solo at one metronomic rate in the space of a track at another… sort of like Monday and Tuesday crammed into the space of Wednesday.

El solo y el bordón se grabaron con un par de micrófonos Neumann U-87 en un Nagra de 2 pistas, a 38 centímetros por segundo, en un camerino con un sonido bastante ‘húmedo’, mientras nos calentábamos antes de un concierto en la Universidad Hofstra en Long Island. Más tarde, este par de pistas se xenocronizó con una pista de batería descartada de “El océano es la solución definitiva”. The solo and drone bass was recorded on a 2-track Nagra, 15 ips, with a pair of Neumann U-87 microphones in a rather wet-sounding dressing room, warming up before a concert at Hofstra University on Long Island. This pair of tracks was later Xenochronized to a drum track outtake from “The ocean is the ultimate solution”. The introductory orchestration was added next, and then the Höfner bass (recorded at half-speed), rhythmically splitting the difference between the two different track tempos.
